The opening act of Congress of the International Society for the Sociology of Religion 2019 took place last Tuesday at the main hall of the CCCB in Barcelona. This year´s conference is co-organized by the research groups ISOR of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and GRECS of the Universitat de Barcelona and explores the theme: The politics of religion and spirituality.
More than 500 scholars will be in Barcelona between 9 and 12 July discussing a variety of topics in the sociology of religion and related areas, such as the emergence of religious pluralism, the increase in discrimination based on religious affiliation such as anti-Semitism and Islamophobia, or the visibility of new spiritualities and religious movements, among many others.
The event was attended by the Director of ISOR, Dra. Mar Griera, the Vice-rectors of the University of Barcelona, Mr. Francesc Xavier and Roigé Ventura, and of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Mr. Javier Lafuente, as well as the Minister of Justice of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Mrs. Ester Capella i Farré, who highlighted the importance of scientific research and knowledge in this subject for the city of Barcelona.
The opening act was followed by a round table entitled: “Diffuse Borders: Religion at the intersection of spirituality, culture and politics” with the interventions of Dr. Anna Fedele (CRIA- Lisbon University Institute), Julia Martínez- Ariño (University of Groningen), Dr. Roger Sansi (University of Barcelona), and Avi Astor (ISOR Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona), moderated by Dr. Mar Griera.
